As we celebrate the monumental 250th birthday of the United States Army, we are reminded of the bravery and dedication exhibited by those in uniform every day. We do not merely recognize our past; but also pay tribute to the diverse individuals who have served honorably. While every single member of the US Army should be honored, remembered, and celebrated; we also take the time to honor the members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their stories. Their honorable service throughout our short history reflect resilience and pride, showing that the journey towards equality within the military has been rocky but transformative.
A Legacy of Valor and Diversity
When considering the US Army, strength and discipline come to mind. Beginning in the revolutionary war, the US Army was a rag-tag group of dedicated citizens who valued freedom over tyranny but lacked the refinement of what was considered a 'gentlemanly Soldier' at the time.
From the Revolutionary War to today, countless LGBTQIA+ Americans have fought valiantly for our freedoms. Many of these heroes remain unrecognized, but their contributions significantly shaped our military’s effectiveness. Many historians believe the earliest known homosexual in the United States Army was Baron Friedrich von Steuben. A Prussian Military man hired by General George Washington for his tenacity, discipline, and valor, also had strong 'romantic relationships' with many men including Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens. Had it not been for Friedrich von Steuben, we may not be celebrating this pivotal anniversary at all.
During World War II, a substantial number of LGBTQIA+ personnel served, often facing discrimination and persecution. The repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2011 represented a significant turning point, enabling LGBTQIA+ service members to serve openly. This change was not just a legal victory; it was a symbol of the ongoing struggle for acceptance and equality within the ranks.
Pride in Service
As I reflect on the contributions of LGBTQIA+ service members, I am reminded of the countless individuals that came before us. Many of our own members served within the US Army admirably from our own backyards, to France and Germany, Vietnam and Korea, to Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other austere environments. They served in silence and in the open thanks to those who've come before us.
Celebrating Diversity in the Ranks
The military’s acknowledgment of LGBTQIA+ rights is not only vital for inclusivity but also enhances operational effectiveness. Research shows that unit cohesion improves when service members feel safe to express their authentic selves. Higher morale directly correlates with better performance and retention rates—key factors for military success.
Events like Pride Month initiatives within the Army demonstrate a notable shift towards acceptance. These celebrations highlight the identities that enrich our military culture and bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds. As a result, we have witnessed a transformation in attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ individuals, underscoring that every soldier contributes unique skills and perspectives.

Reflecting on the progress we've made, I'm inspired by the Army's current direction toward inclusivity. The values of honor and service now intersect beautifully with principles of equality.
In today’s Army, readiness and effectiveness take precedence over past biases. Recent policy changes emphasize that diversity is a strength, showcasing how the military thrives on its wide array of experiences. LGBTQIA+ service members play crucial roles in all aspects of military operations, demonstrating that courage and dedication know no bounds.
The Road Ahead
As we celebrate the Army's 250th birthday, it is critical to recognize the work that remains. While significant progress has been made in supporting LGBTQIA+ service members, vigilance and advocacy are necessary.
